The transition from ICD-9 codes to ICD-10 that scares me - and the reason is.

The experience of the NPI

Especially the assessment by the adoption of the NPI (National Provider Identifier) numbers and the challenges it gave our service billing, ICD-10 code execution has the potential to be very disruptive if there is planned an operation or billing services, and prepared.

And NPI was just a number - ICD-10 codes are much more complex. Even if you're prepared and your supplier, how is the clearing and payers of insurance? Not one of the largest insurance payers of all calls - Medicare!

If you include our billing system service NPI, we had the costs and disruption to the modernization of our business management software, or repeating the card linked to our claim to be sent to the clearing files. There were also problems and confusion for some insurers over the old ID number, group and individual NPI NPI.

This resulted in many statements which are not always to the first - or second - or third ... In some cases, requests that must be submitted several times. This was a major problem for our customers, revenues - and us. And our customers want us to service billing answer for everything.

As with the NPI, we can expect that all have different interpretations of what is required to implement the new ICD-10 codes.

What threshold does it cost?

What are the costs to small Medical Billing Service? What does it cost to our suppliers?

1. October 2013 seams like a long way - but we must learn to plan and prepare for this transition now. I do not know if we all fully understand how much this will cost in direct and indirect costs.

What I mean by direct costs time and money needed for education, mapping ICD-9 to ICD-10, and the risk of costly software changes. Indirect costs are related to the interruption of payment for a supplier - particularly small. I have a feeling this is another unfunded mandate, which runs from HIPAA requirements 1996 thats all costs.

A brief background of the ICD-10 codes

ICD-9 codes are almost 30 years old and can not be extended further diagnosis. Many of the diagnostic categories are full. ICD-9 number 3 to 5 characters. The first is a number or letter of the 2nd 5 are the numbers with a decimal point after the third character.

ICD-10 codes 3 to 7 characters, is the first letter of the 2nd 7 is either a letter or number to be long with an accuracy of 3 characters. These codes are organized into chapters and subsections with diseases that are summarized in writing. It allows diagnosis codes at 155,000 compared to a maximum of 17,000 ICD-9 codes.

Presumed larger number of codes in ICD-10 will make it easier to find the correct diagnosis code. ICD-10 has a better structure and is more accurate to make it easier to use than ICD-9. Most methods use a relatively small number of codes that is the kind of specialized training context.

Part of HIPAA

HIPAA regulations impose requirements on the use of ICD-10 with a monitoring plan day 1 implemented in October 2013. The Authority requires implementation of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HHS does not intend to delay implementation.

The transition to ICD-10 is connected to the transition to version 5010 standard for electronic transactions, from 1 January 2012. 5010 amendments are necessary to meet ICD-10 codes and NPI.

ICD-9 will no longer exist after the introduction of ICD-10. ICD-10 is currently used by other countries and is updated each year according to ICD-9.

The themes for most providers and those they serve, is the potential economic consequences. If the method management system may be larger number of diagnostic codes to accommodate (up to 155,000) for ICD-10?
